Moving to Luxembourg is exciting β€” but the financial admin can feel overwhelming. Here's a clear 90-day checklist to get everything in order.

Week 1: Register Your Arrival

  1. Commune registration β€” Visit your local commune within 8 days. You'll receive your matricule (national ID number), essential for everything.
  2. Residence permit β€” EU citizens get a certificate of registration; non-EU citizens need a residence permit from the Immigration Directorate.

Weeks 2–4: Banking

  • BGL BNP Paribas β€” English service, good online banking
  • ING Luxembourg β€” Competitive fees, English app
  • Spuerkeess β€” National savings bank, branches everywhere
  • N26 / Revolut β€” Digital options for those who prefer app-only banking

Bring: passport, proof of Luxembourg address, employment contract.

Month 2: Tax & Social Security

  1. Register with ACD β€” your employer handles payroll tax automatically via your matricule
  2. CNS registration β€” Your employer registers you for health insurance
  3. CNAP registration β€” Pension enrollment (automatic via employer)
  4. Determine your tax class β€” Class 1 (single), 1A (single parent), or 2 (married)

Month 3: Optimise

  1. Check your tax card β€” ensure correct class and any deductions
  2. Open savings account β€” Luxembourg has favorable savings rates
  3. Review supplementary pension β€” Consider a 3rd-pillar pension for tax-deductible contributions
